I had to rewatch The First Avenger to see how he died, if there was a chance of survival and how he ended up in Vormir. Admittedly, it wasn't obvious at first, but when you learn that he's holding the Tesseract, which is also the Space Stone, the Infinity Stone that can alter space to teleport you anywhere in the universe, it became clear that he was teleported to Vormir to get more Infinity Stones to increase his power, but without the Space Stone to teleport him to the others and that the Soul Stone needed a living sacrifice, he kinda boxed himself in on that one.

Not quite. He didn't choose to be teleported to Vormir. The Tesseract "punished" Red Skull for misusing the Infinity Stones by making him the guardian of the Soul Stone. Since it can only be obtained by sacrificing someone you love, and Skull loves no one but himself, he's basically forced to guard a object of great power that he can never claim for himself.
