The closing years of the Western, European-dominated world, when a lot of things were still wonderful but if you were gifted with clear vision and insight, if you were paying attention, you could see the end in sight. The 1970s and 1980s. We experienced the last gasp of the real America, the high point of western civilization. Then the decline began. Our childhoods are suffused with memories of paradise, freedom and happiness...but our adult lives have been lived in the shadow of global decline--through the Clinton 90s when the seeds of ruin were sowed, the illusion-shattering 9/11 and the first recession which crushed our dreams of "making it", the endless middle eastern wars in which many of our friends died, or returned broken men. Then Obama came into power and political correctness and progressivism took hold. So many of our families and friends began losing everything. Authoritarianism loomed within view. We could no longer speak freely. Corruption was endemic. Then the Great Recession hit and we did, again, what we had learned to do best: we endured. A brief respite in the 'oughts had given some of us a small nest egg, maybe a home and family; then many of us lost it all, and those who didn't learned the survival lesson most of us had already learned during our childhoods as the first "latchkey kid" generation and the first generation of kids to suffer the divorce of our parents. We hid. We hunkered down. We reduced our expectations yet again and some of us survived. We are a generation of cynics, anon, and a small generation too because women aborted at least half of us. We're just watching it all burn and doing everything we can behind the scenes to make our final retreat innawoods and reject society completely. Oh, a few of us are fighters, remarkable ones too. But we're such a diminished generation to begin with, that most people just see boomers and millennials. Ultimately, that's okay with us. Leave us alone.
