It should be noted that in older english and french apple was originally a catch all term for the most prominent fruit of a region, and only came to be associated exclusively with the fruit of the apple tree as the apple tree became the most common fruit tree in the British Islands.
With that context names like pineapple and 'earth apple' make a lot more sense.
