I actually talked to a few Canadian friends of mine, one of which is a native by… some measure of ancestry? Enough for her to get deliberately ignored at a hospital apparently. There's a huge difference in how the US and how most other countries talk about natives… in most colonized nations, they just flat out pretend they don't exist and/or their ancestors didn't genocide the natives. As a contrast, I first found out about US natives getting massacred and horrifically abused back in FOURTH GRADE when one of my teachers told us the truth about Columbus and why natives outright refuse to celebrate his holiday. and I learned more every single year in school since then. Now, when did my Canadian friends first learn about how their country treated the natives? University. They had to be in college and specifically pick up a history course to find this out about how Canadians treated their natives, as well as the horrible conditions they're in right now.

Say what you want about "white guilt", but at least Americans don't sweep theirs under the rug. They may try to soften the blow at a young age, but they'll freely admit that there were horrible things done. So while the US has a reputation for systemic racism, what do other countries have? denial?

They get away with a lot of it because thier PM is a photogenic PR weasel.

Its the blairite model, a winning smile, competent image grooming and a tragedy to hide behind can turn tyrants into humanitarian icons in the eyes of foreign press.

Fortunately they have a sell by date, Blair is a pariah these days and Trudeau's image has a fair few cracks. The current apex of blairite leadership is the Prime Minister of New Zealand; really going the distance on the Christchurch ticket.
