A lack of quality control is certainly a factor, but it's a case of sequelitis. The first is usually best because it was good enough to make a sequel. On SCPs: with the writing format, and world rules established, it's more difficult to write something new and good.
The new rule of "no SCP cross-experiments" doesn't help interest either since each one exists in a vacuum. I remember spending hours in the 1-999 range reading through entries because of those.
Maybe try some SCP-readings video channels? They usually stick to the popular ones.
