Turning Doki Doki Panic into a Mario game definitely was a good idea in the long run since it helped add plenty of new things to the Mario series. We got differences in movement styles for the characters which have stayed well into the modern day, enemies like Shy Guys and Birdo became mainstays, and plus you get some occasional fun references to the game's true origins like how in one of the more recent Paper Mario games there's a musical number involving Birdo where she goes "you make my heart go doki doki panic." It's both a gaming nerd and weeb joke rolled into one.
it would be neat if Doki Doki Panic could get a modern re-release but there's legal issues (the Doki Doki characters were mascots for a Japanese radio station, and I dunno if Nintendo wants to pay a licensing fee for characters that said station probably doesn't even use anymore).
