FREE SPACE (MANDARIN ONE DAY????) Have zero knowledge of the language and it's daunting as hell to me But I genuinely believe the PRC will become the unipolar world power by 2050 and Mandarin will become the lingua franca Know that I need to start learning but can't bring myself to do it SPANISH Took five years in middle and high school, most of my peers forgot it but I kept practicing Have been into Impressionist art and music almost all my life I have a friend with whom I practice exclusively in Spanish Useful language for living in the United States B1 proficiency FRENCH Was learning piano during COVID quarantine, decided to learn French as well. Have been taking Duolingo lessons for two years but it comes much more easily than Russian because I have existing Romance knowledge A2 proficiency GERMAN When I was 14 I had a very brief Wehraboo phase ensconced in a larger WWII phase Wanted to learn German to better understand the movie dialogue Signed up for classes sophomore year but first signed up for the high school's AP German trip over the summer Only after I got on the plane did I learn it was an immersive trip and English was forbidden My friend tried to help me out but over a month I had to learn with a harsh curve Never forgot it, would say I'm between A2 and B1 on this jawn ENGLISH My native language, have been learning literally since birth The language you're reading right now That's it ESPERANTO Found out about Esperanto in 2018 and was really hype for the concept Also I wanted a language that few other people knew in which to take notes so people couldn't see I was writing about them I vigorously took self-guided online classes for four months and did indeed take lots of notes in it Then totally lost interest and now I hardly remember it at all It was just an immersive phase VULGAR LATIN I took a few medieval law/history classes in college and a lot of primary sources were in Vulgar Latin My professor (RIP Dr. G) convinced me to take a couple Vulgar Latin classes so I did Definitely unable to converse, but can pick up. main points from documents. and catch every fifth word from hearing dialogue Got really into Bald and Bankrupt in 2017-18 and started taking Duolingo Russian so I could understand background dialogue Has helped immensely with learning other Romance languages RUSSIAN Then went to Ukraine. and spoke exclusively Russian (with some English) there Have been learning for four years and would say I'm fairly conversant now, I peg myself on the B1 level ITALIAN Grew up in an immigrant family so spoke it at home My Dad owned a restaurant and I started working there at 13 (sorry Department of Labor) Learned a lot of restaurant lingo and swears very quickly Can still communicate well otherwise, I read both Dante and D'Annunzio in Italian and I have no problems over there C1 proficiency
