I honestly think that digital distribution of this movie would be something that Sony could do to curb their losses. I completely understand why they cancelled the film release due to the threats, but it shouldn't stop them from releasing the movie in a less centralized format. This is basically the counter-terrorist way of getting the movie out.

They probably are withholding the movie in fear of future breaches and repercussions.

It would be pretty funny if Sony "leaked" the film and then accepted donations for the film as an "oh darn. hacked again."
