About

Peepo, also known as Pepo, is a series of various emotes on Discord and Twitch depicting poorly drawn versions of Pepe the Frog, sharing similarities to Apu Apustaja (or "Help Helper" in English). The emotes are typically used in chats on both platforms to express a number of emotions depending on the type of Peepo used, ranging from happy to sad or more situational depending on the context. Hypers are also types of Peepos, often used within specific communities, such as GreekGodX. The first Peepo variations date back to at least 2017.

Origin

The image used for Peepo emotes comes from the Apu Apustaja (Help Helper) meme (shown below), featuring a poorly drawn variation of Pepe created in the style of Spurdo Spärde. While originally popularized on the Finnish imageboard Ylilauta, where it is also rumored to have originated, the character is also commonly seen on 4chan.

On FrankerFaceZ,[1][2] there are roughly 2,800 different types of Peepo and Pepo emotes depicting Pepe in numerous versions. The earliest Pepo variant, pepoWant, was uploaded to FrankerFaceZ[12] on March 1st, 2017. The first Peepo emote, peepoCheer (seen below), was uploaded to BetterTTV[3] on July 24th, 2017, and later uploaded to FrankerFaceZ[11] on October 18th, 2017. The most popular variant, widepeepoHappy, was uploaded on August 4th, 2018, to FrankerFaceZ[4] and is currently used in over 32,000 sets. According to StreamElements[5] chat statistics, widepeepoHappy ranks number 30 out of Twitch’s top 100 FrankerFaceZ emotes, with over 16.1 million uses.

Spread

Use of the emote on Twitch can be seen in a video from Twitch streamer Pokimane, uploaded to her Facebook[6] account on August 11th, 2019, where she names a chicken in Minecraft after the emote as viewers spam its use in chat (shown below). The clip was viewed over 1.8 million times, liked 70,000 times, shared 18,000 times and commented on 3,600 times.

On December 22nd, 2019, Twitch streamer Peter Park uploaded a video to his Twitter[7] account under the caption “Peepo back at it again.” In the clip (seen below), viewers can also be seen spamming various forms of Peepo emotes during the stream. The video received over 18,500 views and 1,100 likes.
