Really feels like they're reaching here, if weren't for the accompanying picture I never would have envisioned that sentence this way.

Eyebrows is plural in both pieces- Thus making the statement about a singular mustache being his eyebrows incorrect grammatically. "His eyebrow, a swirling black mustache" would make sense with the picture, but Eyebrows implies two, and not a unibrow. 1 point oxford.
