kingofblahs- 23 hours ago My mod for the community revealed merchant, Dragon Slayer, BI Archer, Social Butterfly, Barbarian, and Rogue. Each one of these were going to have unique starting and victory conditions, alternate objectives to beat the game, as well as unique inventory additions and of course the ability to avoid the opening sequence. Unlike another similar mod, this was going to give real objectives rather than just alternate starts. Too bad because of the children in these forums, I'll be the only one playing it. It was fun while it lasted, but I'm not going to do this for free. Farewell.

I'm going to lay this out for you since your deficient brain can't seem to handle why this is a terrible deal for everyone involved (with the exception of valve and bethesda). WHY THIS IS BAD FOR MODDERS This sets the barrier to entry for young, non-financially independent modders impossibly high. In case you've never used a mod in your entire life mods are generally an amalgamation of multiple different mods. You learn from others and borrow parts of their work. Erecting a paywall throws a wrench into this entire process. Cooperation between modders largely will become a thing of the past as a result, as everyone is going to want a piece of that paltry 25% pie. Less and less people will bother becoming proficient at modding as a result, and the scene shrink b-but you can still choose to have a free mod! you don't even need to use the workshop That's b------- as well. Valve has already come out and explicitly stated that someone making a paid workshop modIS ALLOWED TO USE SOMEONE ELSE'S CONTENT, PROVIDED IT IS FREELY AVAILABLEThis will inevitably drive ALL modded content to be posted EXCLUSIVELY on the workshop, for money. Why? Because why the f--- would you make a free mod when some n----- can just come and steal your s---, and then sell it for money himself? You wouldn't The other major implication in all of this is the death of the large scale, multi-person team mods. Imagine a mod like 'Interesting NPCS' getting made under this system. That mod took dozens of people to nish. Imagine having to dole out the 25% amongst all those different people No this is going to encourage nickel and dime b------- DLC content that isn't worth sit. Why would you make any quality content when you're already getting such a s--- cut in the first place? People are going to be chasing the almighty dollar and nothing else. WHY THIS IS BAD FOR CONSUMERS This move is incredibly anti-consumer. Part of the deal with mods was they were an unofficial third party product-they could be expected to not work, to cause any number of complications I've had to troubleshoot dozens of mods myself to get them working. It was just expected, part of the deal, because they were free. This system provides no recourse for broken mods, no quality control. The 24 hour refund is a joke because it refunds you in steam cash, 100% profit for valve It also gives incentive to developers to slack on implementing features that modders can easily fix. What incentive do developers have to develop, say, a functioning PC user interface for their churned out. SkyUI is already proof that this is happening. The newest version is going paid on steam. What's SkyUl you ask? Basically an unofficial patch that makes the Ul f------ usable on PC, because the vanilla one is utter s---. Essentially, if you buy SkyUI, you're buying a f------ patch. Paid mods are only bad news, and you'd have to be a f------ retard to not think so. The correct system (if they actually care about supporting the mod scene) would be to create a very VISIBLE and OPTIONAL donate button where ALL of the proceeds went to the modders, or at east a VAST ma onty 90% t Erecting a pay al is a f------ s--- y de or eve yon involved except for those greedy f------ k----

We've done this because it's clear we didn't understand exactly what we were doing. We've been shipping many features over the years aimed at allowing community creators to receive a share of the rewards, and in the past, they've been received well. It's obvious now that this case is different To help you understand why we thought this was a good idea, our main goals were to allow mod makers the opportunity to work on their mods full time if they wanted to, and to encourage developers to provide better support to their mod communities. We thought this would result in better mods for everyone, both free & paid. We wanted more great mods becoming great products, like Dota, Counter-strike, DayZ, and Killing Floor, and we wanted that to happen organically for any mod maker who wanted to take a shot at it. But we underestimated the differences between our previously successful revenue sharing models, and the addition of paid mods to Skyrim's workshop. We understand our own game's communities pretty well, but stepping into an established, years old modding community in Skyrim was probably not the right place to start iterating. We think this made us miss the mark pretty badly, even though we believe there's a useful feature somewhere here. I want to talk about how paid mods are going to affect the PC gaming community and Valve. If this is really the best thing for the community Some of you think that paid mods are good for modders and the modding community. That paid mods will create growth in the modding community. I think in the SHORT TERM, this might be true. But in the LONG term, paid mods, under the current system, will be a giant disaster First, some things to point out paid mods are mostly for Valve and Bethesda's benefit, not the modders. >IE modders only take away 25%, and only after they generate $400 mods that break after 24 hours will not be refunded as far as I know, there is no sort of QA system for paid mods, nor is there a system for preventing the assets of another modder being used in a paid mod Got those? Okay, good. Now for he real argument Valve created the Steam Workshop as a place for modders to freely share their mods and resources, with each other, and other gamers. This has always been a free service, both for modders, and consumers. The idea here being that it encourages creativity and helps the community grow Now, Valve and Bethesda are attempting to manipulate that environment to produce monetary gain for themselves WITHOUT creating any new wealth or growth >b-b-but this will help the modding community grow! We'll get to that. Keep in mind that we're talking about the production of CONTENT, not money For paid mods, the most immediate effect of this is that many authors are pulling their content under the concern that other will steal their resources and use them for profit. This is already happening, so far as I know. And believe me, when all those nice, paid mods that people purchased break due to an official update, there WILL be blood. If you think this is a bad PR disaster, you haven't seen nothing yet This may be a good cash grab for Valve/Bethesda in he short term, but in the long term this is going to corrupt the community, prevent growth (keep in mind Valve argues that this will grow the community), and result in a PR catastrophe TL DR It doesnt really matter whether PC games are entitled to free mods or not, paid mods are a poor economic decision in the long term because of how the modding community was originally set up and because Valve is doing next to nothing to ensure quality products and good customer service Now go shitpost and ignore everything I said and call me an entitled f-----
