When the Buckwheat Boyz released their first and only album in 1999, Peanut Butter Jelly Time became a viral hit. The album also featured the song Ice Cream and Cake but this song did not inspire many viral derivatives right off the bat.
In August of 2006, Youtube user carlos786 created a video for Ice Cream and Cake. Today the video has over 1.5 million views.
And in September of 2006, Youtube user BryannaJ uploaded a video of herself and three friends dancing to the video. Today, this video has over 700,000 views.
Then, in July of 2009, Cliff Freeman & Partners were contracted to design a commercial for Baskin Robbin’s ice cream. The ad agecy put together a commercial featuring characters dancing to the old Buckwheat Boyz Ice Cream and Cake.
Inspired by the popularity of the new commercial, Youtuber tcrystalm created a picture-dance with one of her characters. tcrystalm titled her video “Tokyo Crystal Mew Official Meme.”
It seems that by declaring this a meme, she inspired over 40+ Youtube users to create their own “Ice Cream and Cake” videos; although this could be viewed as a hijack of a pre-existing phenomenon.
