My Boyfriend Does My Makeup is a series of YouTube videos in which female uploaders invite male friends, usually their significant others, to apply their makeup on camera. These videos are commonly shared online for the sake of humor that arises from the male partner’s inexperience in makeup application and the often unsatisfactory end result.
While tutorial videos for applying makeup on oneself have been around since the beginning of Youtube, the first videos in which males apply makeup on others only began to appear in 2010. The first video of this kind was uploaded on January 23rd, 2010 by YouTuber juicytuesday. Titled" “BOYTOY DOES MY MAKEUP!!,” the video featured YouTuber juicytuesday’s friend Aaron, a professional makeup artist applying the makeup.
The first video to feature a male friend with little experience in applying makeup was uploaded on December 23rd, 2010, by YouTuber andreeaaababy. In the video, andreeaaababy also encourages others to try this with any person who does not know how to apply makeup, in an attempt to start a tag for these type of videos.
Andreeaaababy’s video didn’t took off until sometime between March and April 2011, when it was referenced in the related video section of multiple other makeup videos involving male guest appearances.
On April 20th, 2011, MTV Style blog posted an article titled “The Best Of ‘My Boyfriend Does My Makeup’ On The Internet”, in which they presented a list of personal favorite examples. On August 2nd, 2012, YouTube celebrity Jenna Marble uploaded her own iteration featuring her boyfriend Max (shown below), which gained more than 7 million views in the first month. As of September 2012, a search query for the key phrase “My Boyfriend Does My Makeup” yields more than 870 video results on YouTube.
