Oh The Ironing! (1950)

added May 26, 2009 at 03:05PM UTC

This entry has been rejected from inclusion in the Internet Meme Database due to incompleteness or lack of notability.
To dispute this 'DEADPOOL' flagging please leave a comment below, or

Origin: As irony comes up in much of our every day lives, so does the ironing for many a house wife out there. So when something ironic happens to you… Dont think of your circumstances…. Think of the women ironing…

Variations: Ironing, time for some ironing, oh the ironing

Why is it notable: because when applied, it is in itself ironic (a double irony) where ironing does not apply to the topic in question, the response “ironing” is not an expected reply etc and is in many cases to the definition of irony.

Can we get some images and/or videos up in this beezy? It’s clever, but is it a meme?

I know there are things along this line that could be grouped together (eg: “oh the huge manatee”), but oh the ironing I hear more often from people who aren’t even aware of what a modem is.

I agree with Max.
1950? I know this phrase can be found on the internet, but if it came from that long ago, I’d say it’s not much of an internet meme, and probably too IRL.

I’m open to keeping this in submissions for now if there’s any way to improve on it.

I’m gonna throw a -1 on it unless we can show internets relevance

It seems this clever phrase is often attributed to Homer Simpson. Though no one ever gives the episode from whence it came.

This is from the simpsons episode “grift of the magi” dialogue follows:
% Lisa is made to stay after school to do the ol’ blackboard punishment. This
% time it’s “I will not do math in class”. Bart shows up at the classroom
% door.

Bart: [chuckles] Lisa’s in trouble. Ha! The ironing is delicious.
Lisa: The word is “irony”.
Bart: Huh?
Lisa: Don’t you think there’s something weird going on here? We spent all day
selecting fabric swatches, and then our guest speaker was Phil from
marketing.
Bart: All’s I know is I’m getting straight A’s, and that ain’t not bad!

If something is popularized from the Simpsons that kind of makes it insta-famous at birth, and is probably not something that needed the internet to spread.

It wasn’t straight from the simpsons, as it was originally just a common error. They just used it for a joke they wanted.
