About

The Philosophers Stone is a fictional supernatural stone capable of turning base metals into gold, and capable of creating the elixir of eternal life.

Origin

It was first mentioned by the alchemist Zosimos of Panopolis in the early 600's.

Spread

The Philosophers Stone was the goal of any Philosopher who took the path of Alchemy. Though many fake ones where produced, none of them actually worked and Alchemy wound up banned because of this. It is known that the first step involved creating a purple rock, in which Sir Issac Newton found the exact recipe for.

In modern culture it was used as a stone of eternal life in Harry Potter, and an object that allows you to Transmutate elements into Others in Full Metal Alchemist.
