See, the thing about Doomguy is that while his character and personality are simple, they actually make an effort to let him express that character/personality. He doesn't say a single word, but with body language alone – and only with his arms and hands more or less – we are given a depiction of an irreverent and goofy, yet vindictive, just, and righteous man of extreme conviction. "He hates evil and cares for the innocent" is perhaps the best summation of his character – not exactly the most complex or Shakespearean writing, but here's the rub – it is expressed on screen impeccably. He doesn't waste time babbling on about his feelings or asking inane questions from a wheel. Everything we see him do is an indication of who he is.

Doomguy is the ultimate example of Show don't tell. From the way he rips and tears demons with glory kills to the way he disobeys Samuel Hayden by breaking all the Argent energy equipment, you are able to see just how much he hates demons and those who temper with hell. The smaller details like when he fistbumps his own figurine and how the demons react to him (Hint: they sh*t their pants) flesh out a character who seems one dimensional at first but is much more complex than he lets on.
