From what I figure, after that Sonic/Megaman Crossover, Sonic's world got altered as a result of the crossover's ending, Sonic, Eggman and some other main characters retain memories from before. With this alternate world, events seem different, though so far seems more positive, as all the Freedom Fighters are back to normal, complete with new designs that certainly feel more modern. Almost feels like an attempt at a slight reboot

If it is an attempt at a reboot (assuming this whole dual memory thing fades away), It would be a nice change of pace.
