The Best Flag Designs From Reddit's 'Place' 2022
Reddit's /r/place was the talking point of the internet over the 2022 April Fools' weekend. The Reddit initiative, which involved a canvas that slowly expanded from 1st of April to 4th of April where users could place coloured pixels every 5 minutes, was hugely popular and resulted in amazing pixel art work. The subreddit description is a poignant description of what the canvas represents: "Some have visited a canvas before. / A place where togetherness created more. / Now in numbers far greater, taking more space, / It falls upon you to create a better place." Some of the best pixel art came from countries who coordinated together to create flag art with associated icons from their nation. Here are some of the best designs below.
The U.S.A. flag had to be rebuilt many times due to the flag's area being invaded on multiple occasions. It workd out for the better, as this version ended up being correct with 13 stripes (not 15 unlike the original design) and 50 stars (not 168).
Whilst the art was already mesmerizing as it was with the Eiffel Tower, one small attention detail didn't go unnoticed. The French cleverly showed the bottled wine decreasing in volume as the days went on.
This piece features two of football's biggest stars. Ronaldo from Portugal and Messi from Argentina.
With both Italy and Mexico having the same flag colour scheme and structure, they cleverly worked together to create this. Whilst the base colours are the same, each country went on to make art of icons that are well known for their respective countries.
England was one of the first nations to include a geo shadow of the country inside the flag. This lead to many other countries following suit.
