Overview

/r/place or Place is an interactive forum hosted on the social networking site Reddit that allows its users to draw on a blank white canvas by placing a square tile, available in 16 available colors and dispensed every five minutes, on its surface. Launched as an April Fools' Day event in 2017, the novelty subreddit quickly grew into a social experiment involving tens of thousands of members on the site over the course of its 64-hour run. On April Fools' Day 2022, /r/place was brought back for a second time on Reddit.

Background

On April 1st, 2017, at 00:54 UTC, Reddit introduced /r/place,[1] an experimental subreddit comprised of an HTML5-based 1000 × 1000 white canvas on which any member of the site who registered before March 31st, 2017 could "draw" by placing a colored tile square in a 10-minute interval, in the similar vein of the long-running online canvas community Drawball. By 3 p.m. in the afternoon, the subreddit had garnered nearly 86,000 subscribers. By the end of the event, the subreddit had more than 220,000 subscribers.

2017 Developments

Flags

Flags of nations were among the earliest recurring motifs to appear on the canvas, which soon set off a series of competitive drawing in group efforts from different countries across the world. The first known flag war was between Denmark and Sweden.[13] The similarity of Denmark's flag to Sweden's attracted /r/sweden's attention, and their attempt to overwrite it, which they called "Operation Lilla Bält," proved to be successful. Another notable flag war erupted between France and Germany. Before the war, France's vertical flag was located beside Germany's horizontal flag, which became the deciding factor for Germany's success in "Operation Annexion."[14] The battle between the two camps ended after they agreed to make a flag of the European Union over their former battleground. In addition, a number of other smaller-scale flag wars also erupted in other areas of the canvas, including the longtime rival nations, India and Pakistan, which ultimately ended with Belgium prevailing over the Pakistani flag; and Norway and Texas, which ended with Texas' relocation to a spot below Norway.

LI X x X x x x LISRCI.AN isu LM THE FREH

Flags have also been targeted by non-flag factions. The OSU! logo's expansion pressured the Philippine flag into relocating to another spot and switching into a vertical position with its wartime version. The Estonian flag's proximity to the League of Legends logo made it a target of followers of League of Legends streamer Tyler "Tyler1" Steinkamp, who momentarily installed an image of his face on the right side. The American flag also fell victim to the Black Void's assault, but ultimately recovered.

Script Usage

The Argentine national flag was among the first national flags that appeared on the canvas. In an effort to protect the flag from getting overdrawn, Redditor Zequez wrote a script that automatically reverted alteration attempts.[7] The use of the script and variations of it eventually became widespread, and it was later suspected as the leading factor in the shutdown.[8]

Red vs. Blue

The Red Corner and Blue Corner (/r/RedCorner[2] and /r/BlueCorner[3] respectively) were two of the earliest groups that engaged in competitive drawing. Heavily outnumbered from the start, the Red Corner soon faded as the Blue Corner took over and became the largest contiguous pixel space at the time of writing.

Trans Flag & 4chan Raid

The Trans Flag (/r/TransFlagPlace) was another large-scale group effort to create a 'blue-pink-white-pink-blue'-patterned stripe, spanning the entirety of the canvas both horizontally and vertically.

DISCORD,HHTROH THE TAMP SE

Upon taking notice of the LGBTQ campaign, 4chan's /pol/, /b/ and /v/ boards devised several plans to hijack the stripe by overwriting their existing artwork and projects, including a false flag campaign directed at inciting conflict between the Trans Flag group and others (shown below, top-left corner).

The Black Void

The Black Void was a group dedicated to expanding a contiguous black "void" across the entire canvas. Early on, there was a small black demon representing the group, but it was later swallowed as the Void expanded, as well as a large portion controlled by the Trans Flag.

Void

Unlike other groups, the Black Void never stayed in a fixed place and moved around. After their original spot was displaced by the American flag, they tried to establish their presence in the paintings of the Mona Lisa and Starry Night, as well as the OSU! logo.

Fans of the rhythm video game OSU! established a stronghold by the bottom-most part of the canvas[9] by repurposing a previously-existing pink triangle and overwriting with the game's logo previous artworks like the D. Va bunny from Overwatch, the Philippine flag, and characters from Five Nights at Freddy's and Adventure Time. After extracting concessions from their neighbors and establishing control of their area, they experienced attacks from fans of Steinkamp, the Black Void, and the Rainbow Road. They also had to cede the bottom-most part of their area to a group dedicated to building Windows 95's start menu. Their rebuilding efforts were underway when the canvas was frozen.

Pixel Art

Throughout the event, dozens of iconic logos, memes, artworks and pop culture references were drawn in the form of pixel art and overdrawn.

Closure

On April 3rd, 2017 at 16:59 (UTC), Reddit admin Josh "powerlanguage" Wardle announced the closure of the canvas to further edits[4], leading to the rise of several spinoff sites intended for those who wanted to continue their creations. Versions of the feature by Plasteur[5] and Pxls.space[11] included CAPTCHAs to prevent the use of scripts[5], while ColorThisSpace aims to continue from /r/place's final state[6]. Several artworks on the canvas were left with varying states of damage, and /r/thefinalclean was set up to fix the damage and remove stray pixels[12]. The black void, a target of extermination efforts by some members of the group, was assigned a spot near Runescape's error message[19].

Impact

Data Visualization

Shortly after the closure of /r/place, many Redditors began analyzing and visualizing the data of /r/place over the course of its three-day existence, including heat maps and height maps revealing various insights on the level and depth of participation.

0 recorded change

The earlier visualizations were based on incomplete user-compiled data. On April 18th, 2017, a complete dataset was released[21].

Tributes

Following the closure of /r/place, the subreddit continued to remain active as many users began commemorating the event by sharing photographs of custom-designed souvenirs featuring the final version of the canvas, including jigsaw puzzles, photoshopped parodies and memory drawings of the final version.

Bamboozling

Soon, a bamboozling scheme emerged on /r/place as dozens of Redditors vowed to celebrate /r/canvas in an extreme manner, such as getting a tattoo of the final illustration, should their posts receive at least 5,000 upvotes.

2022 Revival

On March 28th, 2022, Reddit announced the return of /r/place from April 1st to 4th.[20] Within the first day, many competing fandoms vied for control of /r/place, with a large German coalition trying to make a large version of their flag that stretched across the space but getting repeatedly taken over by other flags and fandom groups.

2022 Developments

Streamer Wars

Several Twitch streamers used their large audiences of tens of thousands to directly impact the r/place board, causing quite the stir within those communities. Over the course of the weekend, smaller communities began to get eroded or outright destroyed by bigger twitch streamers with larger audiences, which is what some theorize led to increased bot usage to counteract the larger fanbases trying to take over. A .gif representation of this was tweeted on April 3rd, 2022, by the Twitter user @Shyguymask99[22], showing how smaller communities can spend a long time building something that a streamer takes down in a minute (shown below).

Although he participated in the original iteration, Steinkamp refused to join in the 2022 iteration, [23]

Out of all the streamers, who mostly set up Discords in an effort to coordinate having their logo put somewhere on the board, XQC was more focused on absolute chaos, and over the course of multiple days was telling his chat of over 100,000 people minute by minute what things to try and destroy, causing him to come under fire by multiple places. He became the main antagonist of r/place, and that became more solidified in the last day, as seen in the video posted to the YouTube channel XqC Clips[24] on April 3rd, 2022 (shown below).

2023 Revival

On July 20th, 2023, /r/place returned to Reddit. Users quickly began creating artwork similar to 2022's art, such as flags, emblems and characters representing various fandom subreddits. A feature was added to the canvas where users can right click on an area and see which pieces of art represent a given community.

The day before its return, The Verge[25] published a story titled "Reddit is bringing back r/Place at perhaps the worst possible time," suggesting that it's a bad time to bring the event back due to the site's API pricing changes and protests against Steve Spez Huffman, the CEO of Reddit behind the changes.

2023 Developments

"Fuck Spez" Artwork

On July 20th, 2023, the day /r/place re-opened, users quickly began creating artwork that reads "fuck Spez" across the canvas (partial canvas shown below).

The trans and asexual flags on /r/place have remained fairly prominent aside from the inevitable overlap of other drawings. The the flag doesn't significantly interrupt any other drawings either so the false flag thing didn't seem to work too much either.

If there was any sort of takeover it must not have been a very significant one or it was canceled out by cooperation between users.

I agree. I'd argue that all of the monochrome regions were pretty boring. Because looking at all the other creative patterns and art people were making, by comparison… and then having those… and those covering said patterns and art up…

First, your link doesn't seem to work; the page comes up, it says "Reversing censorship…" then "Error".

Secondly, how does giving admins the ability to get rid of swastikas and other such imagery that's against the TOS against count as being "rigged?" I feel like that's just being responsible. It's not even like it was a secret – the sidebar gave an explanation of how to report pixels that violate the rules. I also feel like r/place ended up being a lot more fun than it would have been if we had to spend all of our time worrying about cleaning up swastikas.

Anyone else feel as though having the US flag in the center is just right? I mean its not the prettiest most interesting piece but if you watch the stream the US flag tries to be everywhere else but was always kicked out but only in the center did it form with enough people supporting it so it could withstand those who wanted to destroy it. Its almost like the internet is saying that the US while flawed should be in the center of all this chaos as to add a foundation for peace and stability and that it would support it should it be threatened. I find that beautiful

Nobody ever seems to mention the Dutch managed to get their flag, the first two verses of their national anthem, a portrait of their king & queen, an alliance with r/goodboye, their coat of arms, some beer spilling over Czech Republic AND a half-finished cheese Nyan Cat onto the final canvas and frankly that makes me a moderate grump

Setting up the Tally Hall part of the canvas was no easy feat. Our first venture was successful, but we were helpless against the onslaught of the neighbouring Swedish flag. After we managed to relocate and rebuild in more peaceful grounds, our little Andrew stickman started to get absorbed by the marauding Mexican flag! We managed to save ourselves by shifting to the left and cozying up against the Arsenal FC logo.

Some Reddit Admin (not even a Mod, somebody employed by the site) by the handle of "u/Chtorrr" got caught placing more than one tile every 5 minutes, just drawing all over the canvas. Posts acknowledging this kept getting removed until one thread pointing it out got a Moderator's pinned comment trying to justify it as simply "keeping the canvas safe for everyone" despite them also drawing freely on white spaces.

Way to ruin the fun by both abusing Admin powers and shoddily trying to justify it.

Some people take this event a little too seriously. I agree that big ego streamers crashing in and making this all about themselves can be annoying, but equating the whole thing with "attacks", "harassment" and other serious things seems a bit overblown for what is essentially pixels on a digital canvas. If the art itself is so important, why not make it yourself within a community where no one else will draw over it..? Part of the whole point of r/place is that it is free-for-all and nothing is assumed to be permanent until the last second. It should be trated less like an art piece and more like a videogame, really.

So if this happens again in 2027 and keeps being a thing after that, the "final version" of each Place might be in a museum or in a textbook.

"griefers" is an overstatement when it is just streamers looking for low-hanging-fruit content. Anytime they log off, the griefing stops.

MLP had FOUR whole banners on the canvas, 2 Derpy 1 rainbow dash and another of the whole main cast together.

that is a HUUGE achievment for a fandom that everyone were sure is in it's death throes.
hell, it even managed to conquer more space than other massively huge fandoms like Hollow Knight or megaman.

As a jape I tried to turn one of the subreddit names to be something penis-related because someone had changed the first letter to a P. Somehow each block I placed never got deleted, and I got pretty far before realizing my page had stopped updating and I'd been editing a static image for half an hour.

Is there a term for falsely believing one has godlike power, but because of an outside coincidence and not internally concocted delusions of grandeur? Because I felt that for a bit.

Man, I've been the r/Zelda discord assisting in art creation and it's be really rough. The whole channel has been multitasking on several different projects for the majority of the time, our korok artwork on the Colombia flag got murdered by Moroccan bots, there was this massive conflict between our first triforce and this pepe artwork that was being managed by a spanish speaking streamer, that SAME triforce almost got litterally shat on by some artwork being defaced above the pepes, and when I actually managed to work with enough people to create something OTHER than the series logo that is so iconic, it becomes an annoyance as a one off reference, after the left side French flag desintigrated (in this case, a GBA-style sprite of TotK Link) it only lasted two hours before New Zealanders took over.

Overall, fuck national pride, fuck bots, fuck streamers, fuck the admins for not giving a damn about the bots, fuck spez too I guess even though that's not really a fight I'm participating in, and embrace silly art projects.

This year r/place is really shitty, for example the bottom of the canvas is filled with big streamers art and flags. Small communities are getting fucked really hard this year. That and while there are obviously botted arts, some people use the word "bots" as a buzzword.

I can share that feeling. Right now I'm trying to keep up Reimu on the left side of Bad Apple and we've been constantly at fight with the Canada Flag since their community is divided between members wanting to keep her and others wanting to remove her.

And holy fuck it is so tiring.

I don't think its any more or less obvious, I think the bot problem just became worse every time it happened.

All it needs is a captcha every time you place a pixel.

As long as Canada can't draw it's flag we're good.

Sadly, they managed it in the end…

Seems more like to me like the flag was repeatedly getting warped and attacked, even by the music video itself lol

Here's how the Touhou community created the Bad Apple music video on r/place:

-The users had a template that showed the current frame that should be displayed.
-Each frame lasted for 39 seconds: 20 seconds of dithering where the template showed random pixels to place for everyone, so users were less likely to place over each other; 14 seconds of the template showing all the pixels that need to be changed, so they can catch back on the frame if they're late; 5 seconds of blinking to tell the users that the next frame is starting soon.
-Graphs of how many pixels needed to be changed over time, and how many users would be needed to place them over the course of 3 days were planned out and created months before the event started.
-Around 2000 users and a hundred different communities were coordinating with each other in the last three hours due to the rapid transition from one frame to another.

Overall, it required an insane amount of planning, work, and coordination with one another to create the masterpiece.

We've been so coordinated that some people are accusing it of botting lol.

The whole work had a streamer ( not really a big one though ) coordinating it + the discord servers and its alliances. Though gonna be honest I kinda feel frustasted that it had to be done on this r/place considering the shit going on behind Reddit.

I am absolutely awestruck that this was done legitimately. Absolute kudos to them for doing something that amazing!
