Top TV Memes: The Best Formats From 'New Girl'
New Girl is one of those shows everyone talks about, and you’re not sure why. To be honest, even fans don’t know why; it’s just a general understanding in our society that you will watch New Girl and you will like it, whether you want to or not. It’s been referenced everywhere from college sorority parties to Family Guy. Zooey Deschanel plays Jess, an awkward teacher who moves in with three men after a breakup. Chaos ensues for seven seasons.
Despite being randomly brought up in conversation when you talk to a friend you haven’t heard from in years, New Girl isn’t as popular in the meme community as it could be. Of course, there’s one painfully overused meme from a crossover episode with Brooklyn Nine-Nine, the two-panel meme "That's on me, I set the bar too low." But there are a lot of lesser-recognized jokes from the show that have gone on to become great online references and meme formats. Here are some of the best episodes to find them.
Most Popular Memes: Season 4, Episode 6: "Background Check"
This episode involves a random search being held in the apartment the four share, since Lamorne Morris’s Winston is in the process of graduating the police academy. New Girl is generally pretty tame in terms of illicit substance use, but now that it’s the most inconvenient possible time, Jess claims she has a giant bag of crystal meth. The episode mainly consists of the group trying to hide this from Winston while doing whatever possible to dispose of the meth during the home inspection, including a point where Jess shoves the meth in her bra and believes it has absorbed into her bloodstream.
Perhaps the best part of this episode is a subplot in which the character Coach, played by Damon Wayans Jr, convinces the officer doing the background check that Winston volunteers a the boys and girls club with a boy named Duquan. So, he drives off and tries to lure children into his car to bring Duquan back to the apartment and prove he’s real. Eventually, he gets an adult man to take the role, and they burst in while the group is being interrogated for Meth possession. But perhaps the most famous (and frequently memed) line from the episode occurs when Winston discovers Jess’s meth, which she claims is “medical meth” used to treat her cramps.
Most Meme Potential: Season 6, Episode 14: "The Hike"
In this episode, Jess and her boyfriend at the time get injured and stranded in the wilderness and discover they are cousins, which is basically the fear of anyone from the Midwest, where families are huge and we all already look exactly the same. At the same time, Winston throws a surprise party for his girlfriend that goes horribly wrong. It’s an all-around awkward episode, especially for Winston, who has apparently been featured as a really bad Advice Animal that (thankfully) never caught on past a few dozen memes. It may not be from this episode, but I had to see it, so do you.
But really, the best meme (though it's not appreciated enough currently) from this episode comes from a moment in which Winston is giving a speech that inadvertently showing his existential side, in which he talks about his hobby making puzzles as well as his habit of sharing inside jokes with his cat, Furguson Michael Jordan Bishop. Honestly, most of us on the internet feel the same way. It's about time we were represented by a character standing in the middle of a party telling all the guests how he prefers the company of his cat.
