Brooklyn Nine-Nine is an ensemble police procedural sitcom starring Andy Samberg as carefree cop Jake Peralt and Andre Braugher as the straight-laced Captain Raymond Holt. The series also stars Terry Crews, Stephanie Beatriz, Melissa Fumero, Jo Lo Truglio and Chelsea Peretti. The show has run for five seasons on Fox before being canceled and picked up by NBC.

History

Brooklyn Nine-Nine was created by Dan Goor and Michael Schur,[1] who had previously worked on Parks and Recreation. The two sold the project to Fox, and the series debuted on September 17th, 2013 (first trailer shown below). The series ran for five seasons and 112 episodes on Fox between 2013 and 2018.


Move to NBC

On May 10th, 2018, after five seasons, Fox announced they were cancelling the show. This led to an outpouring of public support for the show under the hashtag "#RenewB99."[2] The following day, it was picked up by NBC for a sixth season.[3] The NBC season premiered on January 10th, 2019 (trailer shown below).


Reception

The show has been a critical and commercial success. The first two seasons of the show gained ratings of 97 and 100 on Rotten Tomatoes.[4][5] The show has also been praised for its portrayal of LGBTQ characters. For example, the show has been praised for its treatment of Captain Raymond Holt, a gay character in an interracial, same-sex marriage.[6] The show was also praised by how it handled Rosa Diaz (Beatriz) coming out as bisexual.[7] It has won two Creative Emmys and two Golden Globes, winning Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy and Best Actor – Television Series Musical or Comedy for Andy Samberg.

Online Presence

The show has a passionate online fanbase, as exemplified by the outpouring of support in the #RenewB99 campaign. The show also has over 1 million Facebook likes[8] and a subreddit with over 246,000 subscribers.[9]

Do You Have Two Minutes to Talk

Do You Have Two Minutes to Talk is a series of exploitables based on a scene from Brooklyn Nine-Nine. In the meme, people replace a line from the series, in which Jake (played by Andy Samberg) goes under cover and asks a stranger if they have "two minutes to talk about the environment." Online, people replace the "environment" with other things people generally do not want to talk about.

On November 15th, 2015, the Brooklyn Nine-Nine episode "The Mattress (season three, episode seven) aired in the United States. In the episode, the protagonist Jake, an undercover police officer, approaches a woman on the street and and asks if she has "two minutes to talk about the environment."

The following month, on December 13th, Tumblr user anachronistique posted a series of screen captures from the scene. The post (shown below) received more than 450,000 notes in two-and-a-half years.

On May 6th, 2018, Redditor FurrAndLoaving the series of screen captures on the /r/brooklynninenine subreddit. The post received more than 12,000 points (95% upvoted) in two days. The following day, Redditor mtrld posted the image /r/MemeEconomy, received more than 20,000 points (91% upvoted) and 200 comments in 24 hours.

That day, Redditors on the /r/dankmemes subreddit began posting variations of the meme, adding jokes about the video game Fortnite, anime, Ugandan Knuckles and more.
