Over the past two months, the "Just a Chill Guy" meme has become one of the biggest memes of the year on TikTok and Twitter / X.
Now, that Chill Guy has a female counterpart with a meme fittingly referred to as "Just a Chill Girl."
But where did this very chill girl come from and how is she being used as a meme? Here's what you need to know.
What Is The 'Just A Chill Girl' Meme?
Earlier this year, a meme known as both "Just a Chill Guy" and "My New Character" went viral on TikTok. The meme is based on a piece of art shared in an X post by artist @PhillipBankss way back in August 2023.
The art depicts a dog-like person in jeans and a sweater with his hands in his pockets, with the post reading, "my new character. his whole deal is he's a chill guy."
Essentially, the meme is used alongside often ironic captions about being a chill guy.
The meme had a massive resurgence in popularity in November 2024, going viral on both X and TikTok, among other platforms. In the middle of the month, a TikToker posted a version of the meme in which they edited a wig onto the character, marking the first known meme about a female chill guy.
Then, the CHILLGIRL meme coin popped up and its official X account started posting more versions of the meme about being a chill girl, successfully spinning off the Chill Guy meme.
How Is 'Just A Chill Girl' Used In Memes?
The "Just a Chill Girl" meme is used in the same basic way that the "Chill Guy" meme is used. Essentially, creators are posting memes in which the chill girl is placed into a given scenario alongside a caption about being a chill girl.
The memes are often ironic and see the character doing something reprehensible under the guise of being too chill to care.
Such memes have mostly taken off on TikTok, but they're also popping up all over X. They've also inspired some discourse about women "stealing" the chill guy meme from the boys.
Mostly, people are just happy to keep the meme going and expand on it in an interesting way.
