Sorting Algorithm Videos are videos in which various sorting algorithms are performed with an audio sample or tone, which causes them to have a musical effect.
Origin
The first sorting algorithm video with sound was posted to YouTube on April 19th, 2010 by andrut in which various lines on a bar graph are sorted. The video (shown below) received over 778,000 views in over twelve years.
Spread
The most popular sorting algorithm video was posted to YouTube on May 20th, 2013, by Timo Bingmann using more sorting algorithms and a different sound tone for the sorting. The video (shown below, left) received over 19.1 million views in over nine years, and was made using an application called "The Sound of Sorting" which he created.[1] On July 15th, 2017, YouTube user w0rthy posted a video using audible sorting algorithms, but used a color wheel instead of a bar graph. The video (shown below, right) received over 5.8 million views in nearly five years, and was made using a program called "ArrayVisualizer" which he created.[2]
On December 2nd, 2018, another video using "The Sound of Sorting" was posted to YouTube by Zanna Mayfair. The video (shown below, left) received over 4.8 million views, and uses different audio settings to produce a unique audio effect. On December 28th, 2019, a clip from Jerma985's Twitch stream was posted to YouTube, in which he tried to copy the sound a sorting algorithm makes using his own voice (shown below, right). The video received over 59,000 views in over two years.
