About

Khia Asylum is an internet slang term derived from "Khia," which is predominately used among the stan Twitter community to humorously label individuals or artists who have experienced a significant downfall or lack notoriety in their career for the last couple of years. The term was popularized in early May 2024, building on the American rapper's name, Khia, as a stand-in for "nobody" and the "asylum" word to form an expression similar to "outdated" or permanently flopped.

Origin

On May 2nd, 2024, X[1] user @impxrfectforyou posted an image featuring a series of notes about famous female pop singers like Beyoncé, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, Rihanna, Adele, Lady Gaga, Doja Cat and many others. At the bottom of the image, the creator wrote the title "Kya Asylum," adding photos of singers like Charli XCX, Zara Larsson, Bebe Rexha and Ava Max, suggesting they're forgotten or simply in their "flop era" of their careers. The tweet (seen below) amassed more than 8,600 views and 100 likes in six months.

Spread

Following its emergence, "Khia Asylum" quickly spread across social media platforms in the following months of 2024, particularly as memes posted by pop singers' fandoms trying to call out their rivals as "flopped" or "forgotten."

For instance, on November 12th, 2024, X[2] user @bxsel posted a reaction video accompanied by the caption "me at my biweekly khia asylum visitations to see how Lorde is doing," which garnered over 146,000 views and 7,200 likes in three days.

On the same day, X[3] user @mazzypopstar posted a clip of Ariana Grande's "Put Your Hearts U" music video, captioning "Her one month in the Khia Asylum was majestic," which gained roughly 885,000 views and 11,000 likes in three days (seen below).
