In December 2009,the then incumbent star of UK sci-fi show "Dr Who",Scottish actor David Tennant,hosted the popular pop music quiz show,"Never Mind the Buzzcocks." During the broadcast,Tennant kept up a running gag going,where he would shake his fist and yell,"BARROWMAN!" after each innuendo-laden joke.The gag referred to his friend & collegue,gay Scottish-American actor John Barrowman,who played omnisexual time agent rogue Captain Jack Hackness in eleven episodes of "Dr Who" & its subsequent spin-off "Torchwood". Alluding to their friendly rivalry(both have a high media profile, & are frequent guests on a variety of UK chat,quiz & variety shows)as well as to the antagonistic attitude some Who fans have towards the flamboyant Harkness character,the joke suggests that most things in life can be blamed on John Barrowman.The cry,"Barrowman!" has entered UK popular culture as a sign of frustration or to underline jokes laden with gay innuendo.
