About

Delta P (ΔP) is a mathematical term expressing a change ("delta") in pressure (P). The rapid change in pressure is an occupational hazard in diving and has been a cause of several fatal accidents involving underwater repair. Delta P achieved online notoriety thanks to an instructional video warning about its dangers and eventually inspired memes referencing it. Delta P memes frequently feature the phrase When It's Got You, It's Got You that appears in the instructional video.

Origin

In professional diving, the mathematical term Delta P is used to describe differential water pressure. Delta P presents a health hazard as divers who are caught by the pressure can get stuck underwater and suffer injuries.

On October 18th, 2010, YouTube[1] user Sean Roos uploaded an instruction video on Delta P produced by The Association of Diving Contractors International that accumulated over 8 million views in 14 years (shown below).

When it's got you, it's got you!

On November 23rd, 2015, Redditor[2] SlimJones123 posted a GIF made from the clip to the /r/WTF subreddit, where it gained over 11,200 upvotes in six months. On October 17th, 2020, YouTube user mchvill posted the clip to YouTube,[3] where it accumulated over 865,000 views in four years (shown below).
