About

Dies of Big Sad is a phrase commonly attributed to the death of the fictional character Padmé Amidala in the 2005 film Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith. Online, it is a common theme for jokes on the character's seemingly pathetic demise and thus the poor quality of the Prequel Trilogy's narrative.

Origin

In the film, Obi-Wan Kenobi (Evan McGregor) has just defeated his former apprentice Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen) on Mustafar, and takes Anakin's wife Padmé (Natalie Portman) to a medical facility on Polis Massa. A droid informs him that she's dying for no clear reason other than sadness over her husband's evil.

GH-7 droid: "Medically, she's completely healthy. For reasons we can't explain, we are losing her."
Obi-Wan: "She's dying?"
GH-7 droid: "We don't know why. She has lost the will to live."

Spread

The earliest known example of the situation being made into a meme came on March 19th, 2018, when a plate toss edit was posted to r/PrequelMemes[1] (shown below, left). It gained 15,400 points in six months. A second example that referenced the film Inside Out was posted on February 24th, 2019,[2] gaining 6,600 points in six months (shown below, right).

Incredibly advanced medical technology Being alive a Padme Being alive Incredibl advanced medical technology killed by killed by killed by killed by

The popularity of the argument led to some memes making a counter-argument defending the death. An example posted to /r/PrequelMemes[3] on November 10th, 2020, which gained 12,800 points in six months, defends Padmé as a legitimately strong female character and argues that her death receives unfair attention (shown below, left). Another posted on March 25th, 2018 explores a theory that the reason she died was not only due to sadness but also because Sheev Palpatine uses the Force to steal her life power in order to save Anakin's life. The post gained 38,900 points in six months.[4]

JUST TO CLEAR THINGS UP: Held a prominent position of leadership at a young age. Defended her planet, made wise decisions. Was NICE to a slave kid but DID NOT encourage/reciprocate his schoolgirl crush Defended galaxy-wide peace at risk of her own life. Faced assassination attempts, deaths of close friends, severe political pressure. Reconnected with a friend, eventually set aside expectations and married a boy who made her GENUINELY happy. Died of big sad, hahahahaha made with ms word w-- am I doing Padme dies because she lost the will to live and a broken heart! Sheev used the dark s ide to drain her life force and give it to Anakin! ALL NEW RICAN CHOPPER EXT THURS. 98 No, the droid literally said "she's lost the will to live!" and why else would he say that one line!? How is a droid supposed to understand the nuances of a life being drained by the force? NEXT-THEIRS. It HAD because KENOBI would have SENSED something! to be a broken heart

Various Examples

"Padmé died of a broken heart" Me, knowing that Palpatine stole her life force to save Anakin So this is how liberty dies; with thunderous applause. At least it's not dying because it's sad. Padme: “... I'm dying!" Medical Droid: “No, you're not. Look what we did for General Grievous. He is just a brain, eyeballs, lungs and a heart. If we can keep him alive, we can keep you alive... Padme: I said l'im dying!
Medical Droid Padme I got you! I got you, Padme Padme Sadness Oh, no, you don't! When you're in perfect health but remember that you're not in the original trilogy. uess I'll d WHO WOULD LIVE? Loses three limbs, catches on fire, and is Sad left for dead

Interestingly, you can actually die of a broken heart. It's called Stress Cardiomyopathy but can also be known as Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy or Broken Heart Syndrome. Unsurprisingly, it can be brought on by extreme emotional stress.

The problem is it's fairly treatable and a medical station should really be able to do something about it. It probably would have been better for Padme not to be in a hospital environment at all when she gave birth. Would have made it much more believable that she died from it.
