The meme gained traction in late December 2024, following a tweet about James Gunn's comments regarding the political themes in his 2025 Superman movie.

Origin

On December 22nd, 2024, X^[1] user @pooroldrolotony replied with “Fun Fact: All Art Is Political,” to a tweet featuring a quote from James Gunn, where he stated, "James Gunn politicizes upcoming ‘Superman’ movie, says bloodied hero represents ‘our country.’" The tweet (seen below) amassed over 15 million views and 124,000 likes in three days.

The phrase "All Art Is Political" became widely used in the next few days as X users began to share instances where a fan art or other piece of media lack any type of politician message. For instance, on December 24th, 2024, X^[2] user uploaded a meme of late rapper XXXTentation using the phrasal template “all art is political” in the caption (seen below), which amassed more than 142,000 likes and 6,400 reposts in a day.

On December 23rd, 2024, X^[3] user @jigokucake posted the Pooping Toothpaste paired with the caption “all art is political,” which received roughly 187,000 likes and 7,300 reposts in two days.
