Overview
"Kill The Faggot" is a first person shooter videogame developed by Randall Herman, and posted on Steam Greenlight on May 4th 2015. The game immediately became a hot topic of controversy within online gaming communities due its homophobic nature.
Background
On May 4th a developer made the game "Kill All Fagg*t" where the main premise of the game was to shot any homosexual in sight. The game additionally gives extra points for murdering any transgender and drop few points if any straight person been killed. Players are awarded 100 points for each ‘gay fag homos killed’ and 150 points for each ‘transgender freaks killed The game also includes bunch of catchphrases related to lgbt stereotypes. The developer claims the game was intended to help his friend sell Christian skating shoes, however he also claims it was to simply prove how sensitive people are [2]
Notable Developments
Jim sterling reviewed the green light trailer and said
"I sometimes think Steam's menagerie of messed up games can't shock me anymore, and then genuine hate speech finds its way onto Greenlight." He also makes remarks about people claiming it being satire then saying "Where is the fucking satire?! what is it satirizing?!"
The game It was removed from steam greenlight within 2 hours.
An Interview
The creator of the game Randall Herman was interviewed and said
"The reason behind this particular game is because of how tired I am of people being overly sensitive and how easily offended people are by every little thing, especially with LGBT issues,” said creator Randall Herman, who is alleged to be a “failed Christian shoe promoter.”
“I didn’t make this game to attack LGBT people personally, and no I don’t hate gays and think they should be treated farily (sic). But I made this game just to piss off those people that are way too overly sensitive, which includes straight people. These people that think if you are even remotely homophobic, you are ‘hateful’ and a ‘bigot,’ and do everything they can to destroy you in every vicious way possible,” Herman said.
“So I decided to go down a path that most developers are afraid to go down: to piss these people off by making the most overly offensive game possible to these idiots to prove a point…As for an apology – ain’t gonna happen,’ Skaldic Games wrote in a statement in response to their game being pulled from Steam. Voice acting
On May 6th it was reported that when Keith Fay's and his girlfriend Rachel Lally (also music by Cruachan) were requested by the developer to have their voices used in game, They agreed to let Their voices and music be in the game without knowing what it was used for. Keith Fay, a member of Cruachan, an Irish folk metal band whose voiceovers were heard on the game, has denounced the project on Facebook, and asked to be disassociated from it.
After finding out what their voices and music was used for Keith Fay said,
“It’s just been brought to my attention that a game featuring my voice as well as my girlfriend Rachel Lally is involved in sending messages of hate towards the LGBT community,” Fay wrote. “The company is called Skaldic Games and they have released a game called ‘Kill the Fagg*t.’ A disgusting game where you get points for killing gay people and penalized for killing straight people. We did not know anything about this when we agreed to appear. A statement was released by the games company that tried to explain their intention. The statement was juvenile and bizarre, basically saying if you are offended by the game, you are an idiot. Well I am offended, and I am not an idiot. We cannot condone this game and hereby disassociate ourselves with it and Skaldic games. We are all for free speech etc. but not when it’s spreading hatred towards a demographic.” [4]
