About

Marriage is a term used for social unions or legal contracts between two parties (or in certain events more), that establishes terms between the parties, know as spouses, between these spouses and their children, and between these spouses and their in-laws.[2]

Marriage varies in specifications by culture, but it is principally an institution in which personal relationships (usually of the sexual and intimate sort), are acknowledged. In most cultures, a marriage is officially recognized after a wedding ceremony has taken place. Legally, many countries have regulations against child marriage, forced marriage, polygamous marriages (marriages between more than two spouses), and certain other more bizarre variations. Same sex marriage has been generally shunned or prevented up until recent times where a growing number of countries have been becoming looser in their restrictions.[3]

Marriage is incurred for many reasons, chief among them being: legal, social, libidinal, emotional, financial, spiritual, and religious. Many cultures as of modern times allow annulling of the marriage or divorce.[4]

Origin

While there is no officially recognized origin of marriage, many cultures have their own personal myths regarding its creation. Monogamy, the predecessor of formal marriage, is thought to have come into being around 20,000 years ago.[1]

Spread

Marriage is currently observed by every major culture on the planet.
