Overview

United Airlines Flight 328 Emergency Landing refers to an emergency landing performed on February 20th, 2021, by United Airlines Boeing 777-200 after catastrophic engine failure over Denver.

Background

On February 21st, 2021, United Airlines Boeing 777-200 en route from Denver to Honolulu experienced a right engine failure shortly after takeoff.[1] After climbing 13,000 feet (4,000 m), an explosion occurred in the right engine, after which some of its cowling and other parts detached and the engine caught fire. The aircraft successfully performed emergency landing at Denver International Airport.

On the same day, Twitter[2] user @michaelagiulia posted a video recording of the incident made by a passenger (shown below).

On the day of the incident, Broomfield Police Department tweeted[3][4][5][6] photographs of debris that landed in the area (photographs shown below).

On February 21st, the US National Transportation Safety Board confirmed that two fan blades were fractured in the incident.[7]

On February 21st, 2020, United Airlines announced that it would temporarily ground 24 of its planes. On the same day, Boeing recommended that airlines suspend flying its Boeing 777 model aircraft equipped with Pratt & Whitney 4000-122 engines while the incident is being investigated.[8] Also on that day, US Federal Aviation Administration ordered the inspection of some Boeing 777 equipped with Pratt & Whitney 4000 engines.[9]

The incident drew significant attention online. The video of the engine on fire uploaded by Twitter user @michaelagiulia received over 12.9 million views, 36,200 retweets and 143,500 likes in three days, with a YouTube[10] reupload by 9NEWS gaining an additional 950,000 views in the same period.
