About
Faustão and Selena Gomez Fanfiction is a fanfiction written about the Brazilian TV presenter Faustão and American singer and actress Selena Gomez. The story started to go viral in 2014 after the presenter mentioned the singer in his show, which inspired a Brazilian to post a fanfic titled "You are my love, my destruction – Faustão e Selena" on the website Spirit Fanfictions. Online, there are countless memes and Photoshop montages of the duo as a romantic couple, mostly spread on Facebook, Instagram, X and TikTok.
Origin
Sometime in 2014, the Brazilian TV presenter Faustão was reading some messages thanking fans and other celebrities. One, in particular, was addressed to American singer Selena Gomez. The moment was posted on YouTube[1] by user @CanaldoAlien on October 23rd, 2016. The video (shown below) amassed over 57,000 views and 1,200 likes in nine years.
On August 20th, 2014, a 12-year-old girl who watched the TV presenter addressing the American singer decided to write a fanfiction titled "You are my love, my destruction – Faustão e Selena." She uploaded the story to Spirit Fanfics[2] with the username Ericazinhaw. The fanfic synopsis read as:
Not all romances are fairy tales, there are some that can kill. This is the case of Selena and Fausto, a beautiful and fragile young woman who carries sadness within her, and a passionate and strong adult. Fate is not in their favor, but they go against fate, if there is such a thing.
Spread
Over the years, the fanfic was widely spread on social media as a meme, with montages pairing the Brazilian and Selena Gomez as a couple. For instance, on January 25th, 2021, X[3] user @petcafer posted a picture of Faustão and Gomez paired with a fake quote from the singer saying "'I can't stand spending Sundays alone anymore,' Selena Gomez would have said to Faustão." The post (shown below, left) garnered over 14,000 likes and 3,300 retweets in two years.
On February 26th, 2021, X[4] user Lewis16998656 then posted a photoshopped image of the two celebrities inside a heart-shaped frame. The post (shown below, right) amassed roughly 7,300 likes and 800 retweets in two years.
On April 17th, 2019, X[5] user @compwny spotted Faustão at the airport and recorded a video of him sending a message to Selena Gomez (shown below). The post received over 125,000 likes and 36,600 retweets in four years.
