About
Foodmood is a slang term for hunger. The phrase has come to be used for humorous purposes on social media as exemplified in a parody opinion piece on the millennials are killing.
Origin
The earliest known usage of the slang was posted by Urban Dictionary [1] user ML Hamilton on November 23rd, 2007. They defined the term as "The feeling deep in your bones where you aren't hungry, but you feel like eating."
Spread
Over the next 12 years, foodmood grew into a popular Instagram hashtag, [2] cataloguing pictures of food and food porn (shown below).
Parody Op-Ed
On November 14th, 2018, Twitter [3] user @drewtoothpaste posted a parody article for the Guardian entitled "Why millennials feel they can physically and mentally 'sense' the need to eat and what it means for the rest of us." The post received more than 2,000 retweets and 10,000 likes in about six months (shown below).
Some, however, did not realize the article was a parody. For example, Twitter[4] user @KyleNeubeck retweeted the article, writing "This is called hunger. Millennials feel hunger. I feel like I’m losing my mind." The tweet received more than 175 retweets and 830 likes in about six months (shown below, left).
Others appreciated the joke, retweeting the photoshop and playing along with the premise (examples below, cente and right).
