Origin
The earliest usage of #MusMeme was posted by the Twitter [1] account @CultureThemes on July 30th, 2018. That day, they posted "Mark Your Calendars: Next @CultureThemes: August 22 #MusMeme." The post (shown below) received more than 5 retweets and 10 likes in less than one month.
Spread
On August 22nd, various museums began posting various pieces of artwork, turning these works into various image macros and object labeling memes (examples below).
Several media outlets covered the popularity of the hashtag, including The Daily Dot, [2] Comedy Central,[3] Londonist[4] and more.
