Newest Member of the Group is a series of exploitable webcomics in which a group of mythical beings invite a new member to their support group. Online, people replace the new inductee from the comic with other things they believe to be fake.

Origin

On March 7th, 2017, the webcomic Bizarro Comics published a one-panel comic of a mermaid welcoming a "vaccine that causes autism" to a support group of mythical beings, such as a unicorn, leprechaun and more. The mermaid says, "I'd like everyone to welcome the newest member to the group, the vaccine that causes autism." When posted to Facebook, ^[1] the comic received more than 6,200 reactions, 6,000 shares and 2,300 comments in a year and a half.

Spread

On August 9th, 2018, the comic was shared on the /r/funny subreddit ^[2] by Redditor Bonbon212. The post received more than 17,000 points (91% upvoted) and 490 comments. It was also shared on the /r/MemeEconomy subreddit,^[3] received more than 600 points (97% upvoted) in 24 hours.

Throughout the day, the image was edited on the /r/dankmemes subreddit, replacing the vaccine with things that the Redditors believe to be fake (examples below).
