Rare Insults refers to the subreddit /r/rareinsults that collects screenshots of inventive and unusual insults shared by people on social media websites and in personal messages. Collecting rare insults since November 2017, the Reddit community accumulated over 2.1 million subscribers in five years. In May 2022, a Twitter gimmick account of the same name was launched, reposting viral posts from the subreddit.

On November 17th, 2017, the subreddit /r/rareinsults[1] was created for the purpose of collecting unusual and elaborate insults shared by users on Reddit and other social media websites.

The subreddit gained over 2.1 million subscribers in five years, with multiple posts reaching Reddit's front page during this period (top posts from the subreddit shown below).

The subreddit has frequently been used as source material for videos by various YouTubers. For example, on October 31st, 2019, PewDiePie uploaded[2] a video in which he read through the top posts from the subreddit, with the video gaining over 15 million views in three years (shown below, left). On November 27th, Cr1TiKaL posted a similar video that accumulated over 2.8 million views on YouTube[3] in three years (shown below, right).

On May 12th, 2022, the gimmick Twitter[4] account Rare Insults (@insultrare) was launched, sharing posts from the subreddit and user submissions. The account garnered over 101,300 followers in six days.

Features

/r/rareinsults collects inventive and elaborate insults and roasts posted by social media users or sent over DMs. The posts are usually shared in the format of screenshots, with usernames sometimes blacked out for the purpose of respecting privacy.
