Final Fantasy VIII Magazine Advertisement
![A magazine advertisement for Final Fantasy VIII. In 1999, this title was very highly anticipated, being the sequel to the most popular RPG ever released on consoles outside of Japan (outside of Japan, VI sold 400 thousand copies whereas VII sold 6 million copies on the PS1 alone).
September 9 was also the American release date for Sega's Dreamcast, and with it a variety of major games such as Sonic Adventure, Soul Calibur, and the 2K Sports series. September 9th was also the day of the widely watched 1999 MTV Video Music Awards and the launch of two news programs from NBC, so overall it was a busy day for media in the USA.](https://i.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/masonry/002/676/320/4b7.png)

Final Fantasy III (VI) Review from Electronic Gaming Monthly #63
![Electronic Gaming Monthly's review(s) of Final Fantasy III (VI) on the SNES.
From the high review scores, it should be apparent that by the late 4th generation, Western publications were handing out plenty of praise for JRPG's, especially from Square. Game Informer gave FFIII/VI a score of 9.5/10, the highest score of any non-Nintendo game on the SNES. And in EGM, other SNES-era JRPG's with high reviews included Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy II (IV), Secret of Evermore, Secret of Mana, and Super Mario RPG.](https://i.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/masonry/002/541/001/fac.png)

Final Fantasy Mystic Quest Magazine Advertisment
![By the time of this advertisement being published in late 1992, the series was still new to the USA, with the original Final Fantasy only getting an American release in mid-1990. However, the series was rapidly expanding, and Mystic Quest was actually the seventh game with the Final Fantasy moniker in the USA.
Mystic Quest was designed for a Western audience, and as such is notoriously simpler than many of its RPG contemporaries. This makes the advertisement's emphasis on being a "brainy" game somewhat humorous in retrospect. The game had a fairly lukewarm reception in the USA, with Electronic Gaming Monthly giving a review score of 29/40 in their previous issue, describing it as a decent game for genre newcomers but little more.](https://i.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/masonry/002/527/656/3f6.png)
