About

Yogurt / Gurt: Yo, also known as Yo Gurt / Gurt: Yo, refers to a pun on the word "yogurt," which morphs it into a conversation of someone saying, "Yogurt," and a character named "Gurt" responding, "Yo." The joke dates back as far as 2012, but didn't gain viral acclaim until 2025. The meme went viral on TikTok in March and April 2025, via a series of JuggTok videos that mutated the conversation into a phrasal template. Meme creators replaced the words, commonly having Gurt respond with "What's up twin," or "SYBAU." Others replaced the "yogurt" pun with other puns that turned one word into a greeting, such as "Support / Port: Sup."

Origin

The "Yogurt / Gurt: Yo" joke dates back to at least 2012, as evidenced by non-viral tweets[1] from that year. However, the joke gained notable traction in 2022 following several viral posts. For instance, the earliest post shared in 2022 was posted by Twitter / X [2] user @LILAVYVERT on February 25th, receiving over 230 likes in three years (shown below).

Spread

Several X users reused the joke in their own tweets and received more engagement. For instance, on June 9th, 2022, X[3] user @wannabereece tweeted the same joke and gained over 20,000 likes in three years (shown below).

The meme notably spread in March 2025, following a Papyrus Irony meme that was shared by Instagram[5] user @freakyfacetimeapp on March 15th, showing a photo of a yogurt cup with the joke written in the Papyrus font. In a month, the meme gained over 267,300 likes (shown below).

The joke spread to TikTok in the following weeks. For instance, one of the earliest examples was shared by TikToker[6] @_aboyo on March 27th, 2025, showing the Penguins of Madagascar as the background video. The video roughly followed the JuggTok format, as evidenced by the squished background and overblown 808 rap song used for its sound. Over two weeks, the video received over 128,700 likes (shown below).

The joke morphed into a phrasal template soon after, involving other puns. For instance, on April 3rd, 2025, TikToker[7] @rex1345v2 posted a video of a capybara with a pun about the word "support" in which a character named "Port" responds, "Wsp gng" (What's up, gang), gaining over 201,700 likes in a week (shown below).
