Komi Can't Communicate (古見さんは、コミュ症です, Komi-san wa, Komyushou desu) is a slice of life/comedy manga series created by Tomohito Oda. The series follows the life Komi Shouko, a 15-year old high school girl, who is regarded as the prettiest girl at her school. However, she is terrible at communicating with others, and sets out to fix this problem with the help of her friend, Tadano Hitohito, and make 100 friends. The manga is serialized in Weekly Shounen Sunday and is published in both Japanese and English.

History

The manga first made its debut in Weekly Shounen Sunday as a oneshot on September 16th 2015. It would then make its first serialized issue in the magazine by May 18th of the following year.^[1]

As of March 20th 2024, the manga has a total of 450 chapters, with 32 volumes published by Shonen Sunday Comics. The manga also received the award for best shonen manga in the 67th Shogakugan manga awards in 2021.

Online Presence

The manga grew popular thanks to a robust online presence and fandom. It has a score of 8.11 on MyAnimeList^[1] and pages on Wiki,^[2] TV Tropes,^[3] and Goodreads.^[4] The manga also has a subreddit with 240,000 subscribers.^[5] Chapter discussions about the manga on /r/manga regularly receive hundreds of points.^[6][7] The manga is also popular among fan artists. For example, a post by Tumblr user the-canine-king gained over 12,000 notes (shown below, left). A gif created by user 3DRod gained over 18,000 notes (shown below, right).

Additionally, several panels of the manga have been used as reaction images memes and in other meme templates (examples shown below).

With this rise in popularity, the manga also became a popular candidate for receiving an anime adaptation. On March 21st 2020, in a poll titled "Manga we wanted to see animated," it reached first place in the results.^[8]

On May 11th 2021, a teaser of the anime was uploaded on YouTube. The show aired its first episode on October 6th of the same year, with OLM, Inc. being the studio in charge of the production. The anime production has a score of 7.88 on MyAnimeList^[1]. On April 2022, it aired its second season, having a score of 8.04^[1].
