An Ouija board is a flat board marked with the letters of the alphabet and the numbers 0-9, with words such as "Hello" or "Goodbye" inscribed on them. They took Internet fame due to the beliefs surrounding this board.

Origin

The Ouija board was reported to have first been used sometime in 1100 AD era China, known as planchette writing as an attempt at necromancy. The Ouija would get its actual name during its use in Baltimore, Maryland to contact the dead in the late 1800s.

On the Internet, after outcry from various religious parties over its use and purpose (most notably from Roman Catholics), these rumors (which include the board being used for divination and as a tool for Satan) quickly spread all over the web.

A creepypasta, simply named The Ouija Board, was uploaded to the Creepypasta Wiki, while earlier, the online viral origin on YouTube, depicting a clip from Charmed of a character using one, was uploaded.

Spread

As the years went on, the device slowly got popular. There are multiple films based on or even just featuring the board.

It has been referenced in television shows and went viral online with people trying out the device themselves.
