Dancing Triangle, also known as Triangulo Bailando, is a computer-generated animation of an anthropomorphic "triforce" triangle from the animated fan-made Legend of Zelda web series The Legend of Zelda: The Light of Courage. Starting in June 2018, the clip gained popularity in memes in which people set the looped animation to different songs. In 2020, the animation, usually paired with "Lose Control" by Missy Elliott, saw a surge in use following a series of viral Twitter and TikTok posts.

Origins

The animation of the Dancing Triangle comes from the second part of the series The Legend of Zelda: The Light of Courage, which was uploaded to YouTube on May 29th, 2006. The video (shown below, left) received more than 152,000 views in 12 years.

On October 24th, 2007, YouTuber DancingTriforce^[1] posted a video of the Triforce dancing to the song "The Legend of Zelda Medley" from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. The post (shown below, right) received more than 9,000 views in 11 years.
 

Spread

On June 6th, 2018, YouTuber^[2] TinoPosts Dancing Triangle set to "Battle Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga Music Extended." (shown below), which received more than 1,200 views in one month. On June 25th that year, Facebook^[3] user EricoTereran reposted the video to "Nintendo Switchposting" Facebook group, where it received over 650 reactions and 300 shares in one month.

On June 27th, 2018, Facebook^[4] account "Super Conchetumario 64" (sctm64) posted an Everyone Is here! meme based on the animation. The post (shown below, left) received more than 340 shares, 130 reactions and 16,000 shares in three weeks. That day, the Facebook^[5] page "El Mismo Triángulo Bailando Con Diferentes Canciones" launched and posted their first video, with Dancing Triangle set to "Snakey Chantey" from Donkey Kong Country 2 (shown below, right). Within three weeks, the post received more than 645 reactions, 550 shares and 25,000 views.

In the following years, the groups posted over 600 videos of the Dancing Triangle set to various songs.

2020 Resurgence

On February 11th, 2020, Twitter^[15] user @melancholyhill posted a version of the video in which the animation was set to "Lose Control" by Missy Elliott (commonly known as "Music Make You Lose Control." The video received over 1 million views, 2,100 retweets and 4,300 likes in two months (shown below).

Starting in late February 2020, the meme regained popularity on TikTok as a video reaction. While the exact first post on the platform based on the format is unknown, on February 24th, 2020, TikTok^[6][7] user @danieldessau posted two earliest found videos using the Dancing Triangle, with one of the clips gaining over 205,900 views and 23,100 likes in one month (shown below, left). In the following days, @danieldessau posted more memes based on the animation; for example, a February 25th meme^[8] received over 500,000 views and 90,000 likes (shown below, center), while a February 26th My Last Brain Cell meme^[9] gained over 927,000 views and 201,000 likes in the same period (shown below, right).

In early March 2020, multiple users on Twitter used the @melancholyhill's post to create memes, particularly of IDK I've Never genre. For example, a March 2nd, 2020, meme by Twitter^[16] user @DEVILWIIFE received over 640 retweets and 2,200 likes. A March 4th meme by Twitter^[17] user @undereyecircle received over 2,100 retweets and 5,700 likes (shown below).

On March 7th, 2020, TikTok^[10] user @beetlejuice_official69 posted a meme based on the animation accompanied by Tongo's cover of "Pumped Up Kicks" by Foster the People. The post received over 3.4 million views and 558,700 likes in three weeks (shown below, left). A same-day meme based on this version by TikTok^[11] user @wysitsdanny received over 7.4 million views and 1.1 million likes (shown below, center). Another meme, posted by TikTok^[12] user @jerryyyk on March 8th, 2020, gained over 4.7 million views and 737,000 likes in the same period (shown below, right). On March 10th, 2020, YouTube^[13] user Mushx posted this version of the animation to YouTube, where it received over 3.2 million views in three weeks (shown below, left). In the following weeks, the Dancing Triangle regained popularity in memes on Instagram and YouTube; for example, a March 24th "Lose Control" meme posted by Cyranek ^[14] received over 270,900 views in one week (shown below, right).

Keju Joget

Keju Joget (Eng. Dancing Cheese) Is a dance that was refers to the “Dancing Triangle” which is mistaken as cheese where the Indonesians mimicking it’s dance while accompanied by a song titled “jgn dipake buat drama komtol” which taken from "Asik Bet Deh Jagonya – Lagi Trending" on TikTok.

On August 1st, 2021, TikTok^[18] user @cikewi_ uploaded the first video that using Dancing Triangle with caption "Keju Joget" with song "jgn dipake buat drama komtol". The video received more than 399,000 likes in 23 days (shown below, left). On August 13th, 2021, TikTok^[19] user @rannunn uploaded video of herself mimicking Dancing Triangle. The video received more than 530,000 likes in 11 days (shown below, center). On August 9th, 2021, TikTok^[20] user @sofarsabi uploaded video of himself cosplaying as Dancing Triangle using yellow jacket. The video received more than 2.7 million likes in 15 days (shown below, right).
