It seems impossible considering its Christmas-time ubiquity, but until today, Mariah Carey's 1994 hit "All I Want For Christmas Is You" had never been a #1 hit. That changed earlier today, when Billboard that the track is now the top song in America.
Billboard's charts combine U.S. streaming, radio airplay and sales data to create their ranking. "Christmas" was the most-streamed song and the number one song in Digital song sales. The track joins less-than-prestigious company as a Christmas song to hit #1. The last track to do so was The Chipmunks' "The Chipmunk Song, which hit #1 in America for four weeks in 1958-1959.
Due to Billboard rules in the 90s, "All I Want For Christmas Is You" was disqualified from charting upon its debut. It first cracked the top 100 in 2000, and when Billboard made streaming part of its algorithm in 2012, the song regularly cracked the Hot 100. A 25th-anniversary re-release of the song's music video contributed in pushing the song to #1.
"All I Want For Christmas Is You" marks Carey's 19th #1 single, which is the most #1 singles all time for a solo artist, and 1 shy of The Beatles' all-time mark of 20 #1 hits. Carey celebrated the long-awaited crowning of arguably her most popular hit on Twitter.
