Yeah I get what you mean. Textures tended to look less pixelated on the N64 because it had a better GPU that could better tell where things were in a 3D space (which is why PS1 games had that "warping" effect on textures, the system had issues reading where things were in 3D spaces, this may explain why some games preferred using pre-rendered backdrops).

The PS1 was actually kind of weird in that the N64 could do 3D better and the Saturn could do 2D better, but hey didn't matter because since the PS1 had the better third party support it sold the best. Just goes to show a console doesn't need to be a powerhouse to be successful (in fact the only two consoles I can think of that were both "the most powerful" and "the highest selling" were the SNES and right now the PS4, which seems to show that if anything it's more of a rarity for the powerhouse console to even be on top).
