It's not about lifestyle, toughness, or being out of one's element. It's about mental illness. When you're depressed, you don't want to take care of yourself because you don't feel the need and can't muster up enough willpower to do it. You just want to sit there and ignore it, hoping that it will just go away somehow if you pretend it doesn't exist for long enough. All the things that pile up stop mattering, and you stop caring.
The point of this post is that real depression isn't some minor inconvenience you can "cure" by doing something fun because NOTHING is fun when you're depressed, even things that should be. It's an illness with real consequences, and overcoming it requires you to start taking responsibility for your actions and your life because you want it to matter again.
