Pixel art is always such a common thing with indie games in order to give something a "faux retro" look, but I'm interested to see someone make a game that instead goes for a look akin to that of the N64 or PS1. Low poly looking on purpose, but really smooth too, basically a "how you REMEMBER old 3D games looking" effect.
Yeah we often tend to remember older 3D games looking better than they really are, like look at a comparison video of Twilight Princess HD vs the Gamecube/Wii original (yes I know this isn't an N64 era game, but still it fits what I'm talking about), side-by-side it becomes much clearer how low-res the textures and shadows looked in the original, plus the original release used a blur filter to try and hide some of the graphical shortcomings due to still being in standard definition. Another good one is Perfect Dark on the N64 vs the Xbox 360 version, which retains the old polygon count but smooths things out considerably, and most of all the framerate is no longer in flux between 15 and 30 frames, but rather a smooth 60 FPS.
