If you showed me this game without its history i would see it as: not bad, not the best game but not bad.

But then stack on all its history and it greatly diminishes the worth of the game. A unfortunate truth.

I wonder how the future will look back on this game?

Hmm I doubt it. Quite a few people are saying there are a lot of good things to enjoy about it. But in some parts it does fall flat.
Duke Nukem Forever still sucks as bad.
