This is such a straw-man it hurts. The reason you can't give control over the roads to private companies is that roads are an essential service people need to be able to access to get to work, get their kids to school, go shopping, etc. So long as one company owns one road (which there is no feasible way for two companies to own a single road) you get a monopoly because people can't choose to use another road to get to a certain location, meaning companies get to charge whatever they want and you will be forced to pay them.
You want to pay $100 a day to get to work one way? No? Then giving companies absolute power over the ability to travel is a horrific idea! Also, because you will be forced to pay to use a road regardless of its condition, there will be little to no incentive for companies to spend any more than the bare minimum to keep the roads functioning. Not only would this raise the cost of living far more than no taxes can compensate, it also guarantees shitty roads too.
Roads aren't like other goods and services where you can choose to take your money elsewhere. Roads are, by definition, a monopoly controlling a given location. Roads are functionally impossible to treat like other services and thus cannot be given to private companies. People who honestly think giving roads to private companies is a good idea are some of the stupidest motherfuckers on the internet.
