I liked the Burton version for the particulars, like the music, visuals, and characterization of the characters aside from the Buckets and Wonka. However, what I didn't like (oh noes, an opinion!) was the character given to Wonka and Charlie: Wonka in the book seemed to have everything under control and was expecting for these kids to fail, along with a shroud of secrecy of his person that never became fully explained, as it should be since Charlie was the main main character. Depp Wonka just seems like every other character Depp plays nowadays, with little variation. Charlie in the book and first movie was more relatable since his flaws were shown, in that he made brash decisions and was influenced by adults like a kid would. Charlie in Burton's movie did get some characterization, but that characterization as a person who could do, and did, no wrong. I mean, if a kid was given a piece of candy the kid would eat it without sharing it with anyone unless told to. Plus the acting was bland and monotone compared to 70s Charlie.
My two cents on that debate. I'll await my hanging with satisfaction.
