Antifa was formed by German communists in the early 1930s and has existed as a persistent entity since then, funded by a number of very wealthy political NGOs which have provided them the power needed to operate basically all over Europe. Most Americans have never heard of them however, since they are fairly new to the United States and the media doesn't exactly like talking about them (until their actions over the past year have become so notorious that they can't be ignored).
