inkskinned the idea that main characters being gay is something that needs "to make sense with the plot is inherently homophobic and we need to stop letting creators get away with using it what you're saying is that a person has to have "a reason" for being gay. that being straight is the default, that we all have to have a tragic past or a "good reason" to be gay. you're endorsing the idea that being gay is so detrimental, so transforming, that characters cannot be gay without it seriously changing the plot in a way a heterosexual couple would not: implying no simple story can be found in a gay relationship, that gay people deserve to be denied representation because we're inherently “complicated the idea that representation needs a "purpose" is disgusting. i mean. ive watched people be like "sure, it's not in the book, but the gratuitous violence against women in the movie is just an artistic choice", watched them say "sure, a main character f------ milking an alien checks out", seen people excuse all kinds of b-------. but you want a gay couple to like. just like each other, and suddenly you need a backstory and a side plot and to justify it. people don't just wake up one day and say, "hmm, i think my plotline is too boring, let me be gay, that'll help out." and the truth is, there's plenty of real- world results of this stereotype: with all our movies being tragedies, with people thinking gay people choose to be gay, with people believing that gay love deserves to take a backseat to straight love.... when people imply that gay love isn't equal to straight love, that it needs some kind of f------ reason to exist.... isn't just cowardly. it's homophobic

Gender and pleasure psshaw hobbitkaiju: So much of the Euro-American understanding of being trans (or anything other than 100% constantly identified with your assigned gender) focuses on discomfort. Some people take this idea to an extreme and claim you can't be trans unless you hate your body and want every surgery available to you. As many other writers have said before, that's not true. It's perfectly possible to be trans with only mild dysphoria or none at all. It's perfectly possible to be trans and have a mental map of your body that looks just like the one you already have But l'd like to push even harder against the idea that trans-discomfort. I'd like to offer this: sometimes the exploration of one's gender can be motivated by pleasure rather than discomfort Let me give an example. Let's say there's a person named Cal. Most people think of Cal as a boy, and Cal's all right with that. So far as Cal's concerned, a boy isn't a bad thing to be. But sometimes, Cal likes to imagine being a girl and being treated as a girl. Those fantasies are always accompanied by feelings of pleasure, satisfaction, anticipation, and warmth. Eventually, having had these thoughts for years, Cal asks people to use 'she' pronouns in private and to refer to her as a girl. Cal does this for another year before claiming the label "trans" Some people would say a person like Cal can't be trans because there's no dysphoria, self-hatred, distress, or even discomfort. There's just a pleasure-based preference. But why is distress necessary? Why are trans people supposed to be defined solely by our pain and self-hatred? It's my opinion that defining trans people solely by discomfort is an aspect of transphobia. The idea behind trans-discomfort is that being anything other than 100% cis is so awful that no one would do it unless the alternative were unlivable Think about that: defining trans people solely by their experiences of discomfort means believing that being trans is so awful that only misery could drive us to it. Why "you must be dysphoric to be trans" is bullshit.

can i ask what's so bad about believing that "real" transgender people need to experience dysphoria in some way, shape, or form? -not trying to start anything bad here, genuine question- dysphoria can be anything from not identifying with your birth sex/gender and socially/mentally transitioning to physically feeling as if you are in the wrong body and need to medically transition, so i don't understand the whole "truscum" argument from both points, if you can get what i'm trying to say Because it erases and invalidates the trans people don't feel dysphoric. There are trans people who don't feel uncomfortable with their assigned gender, but feel that another gender - the gender they ID with, the gender that they are - is a better fit. There are trans people who don't feel uncomfortable with their body the way that it is, and thus choose not to change it. And there are also those who are okay with their body the way that is it, but want to change it because they feel that they would be more comfortable with it if it was different. There are trans people who are okay with being seen as and refered to as their assigned gender, but who feel that they'd be more comfortable being seen as or refered to as another gender - the gender that they ID with, the gender that they are Some would say that is dysphoria, but it's not okay to force that onto someone. If those people don't define themselves as dysphoric, if they don't think of themselves as experiencing dysphoria, it is not okay to try to force them to call themselves dysphoric. It is not okay to say "oh, but you're really dysphoric, even if you don't want to call it that It's not okay to push labels onto other people against their will Not to mention that there are trans people who have neurodivergences that literally prevent them from feeling dysphoria. Consider how common alexithymia is among Autistic people, for example. Then recognise that at the same time, Autistic people are statistically far more likely to be trans than allistic (non-autistic) people. And then, finally, most importantly, recognise the ableism in telling neurodivergent people that their genders and their transness is not real just because they don't experience their feelings and emotions the same way you do Then there's also the trans people who used to be dysphoric, but who have transitioned to the poirt where they no longer feel dysphoric. It's not okay to tell those people that their transness is no longer valid. (And don't start with the "oh, but I meant you have to be dysphoric or you have to have been dysphoric in the past!" because that is not what you said. That is never what you people say. You say have to be dysphoric". Always.) And there are probably many, many more examples that could be given for why the "you have to be dysphoric to be trans" argument is bad. Because trans people are so, so, so vastly varied, there is going to be things and points of view that I have not been able to think of or remember to put in this post. But ultimately, it's defining transness by suffering. It's saying "you must be this miserable to be trans". And I hope you can understand the inherent transphobia in that.

You are NOT entitled to know someone's sexual orientation or assigned at birth gender. tatterdemalionamberite Ways to tell if somebody doesn't belong at Pride: 1) they're harassing the other people there 2) they're in acute medical distress, in which case they belong at a hospital instead, and can come back to Pride when they feel better that's about all I can think of, really another-normal-anomaly 3) they are a lion with a confused expression, in which case they may be in the wrong type of pride and need a lift home. Or maybe not! Maybe it is just their first time at pride and they'll be fine.
